Career Day
Career Day at High Tech High North County is on a Friday in the month of May. It is also where we get to go shadow someone who is an expert in their field of work and hopefully we are interested in this field of work. On this day we get to see what a normal day at work is like for this person. Its purpose is that we are able to see if this is what we really want to be doing after we get out of college and into the real world. Today I went to Baker Electric, I shadowed their IT Director Jeff Saxon. A typical day of being an IT Director is making sure everything is polished and professional looking. There is also lots of research and reviewing involved in this job. Another part of being an IT Director is making sure all the systems and communications between one department to another are functioning digitally. In this company people usually get an off day once every other week.
Like most companies Baker Electric has a dress code have to wear collars and nothing too revealing. Basically like High Tech’s dress code system. The people in the IT department basically make sure all the applications are working so that the people in the field can get their jobs done. Mr. Saxon’s job is to complete multiple projects, he helps his department with things they don’t know or if they are unclear on how to complete that certain objective. Some ways I expect my high school class along with skills I have learned to apply to this profession is skills such as teamwork and communication along with dealing with people that are not the easiest to handle. Some things that my high school class applies to this profession is staying on task and researching things. The credentials needed to obtain this position in a company would be at least a bachelor’s degree in science and computers. He also has numerous microsoft certified computer skills. A new insight that I have gained from this opportunity is that the IT Department isn’t a bunch of geeks sitting in a corner of a room on computers. It's actually a roomful of people who are very intellectual and also have a great sense of humor. These people have amazing social skills and knows how to make someone feel at home and comfortable.
As of now, I am currently not interested in pursuing this career since this was my second choice to shadow. My first choice is nursing in the medical field, or maybe even biotech which is a mix of both IT and Medical. Something I’d like to keep in mind for the 2018 Career Day is to not waste anytime on the weekends and make sure I have my career day locked down and ready to go within the first two weeks of it getting assigned.
Cold Calling Script:
"Hi Mr. Saxon,
This is Jeremy Ong, just calling to make sure that shadowing you is still a possibility. Thanks!
