For this project we were put into groups of three. My group consisted of Oliver Scott and Diego Diaz, an all around pretty good group. We worked together by using skills such as communication and collaboration. An example of using these skills would definitely be when we were working on the actual roller coaster like the track. Something that I think went well would be the laser cutting the designs on the buildings. This is because it was one of the main compliments that we got and I feel like that is what made our coaster stand out compared to others. Some areas I think I can grow as a group member is by not shouting out orders or just doing it by myself. If I do something on my own then what is the point of a group. I am normally not like this, but I feel like this project pushed me to my limits which is good but also caused stress which caused my problem for ordering around my group members and not having patience.
This project involves all or classes and we learned new things that has something to do with this project. In Humanities something I learned about throughout my research would be basically everything about the Irish Revolution. Before this project started, I knew nothing, about and now I know a lot about it, like the timeline for Easter Rising and how many people got killed in the battle for the GPO (General Post Office). A way I used my thinking in Humanities throughout this project is by replicating a major event called Easter Rising that happened during Irish Revolution onto the base of our roller coaster.
Some things I learned in physics throughout this project would be multiple forms of energy like Kinetic Energy, Mechanical Energy, Gravitational Potential Energy, Potential Energy and more. We had to use these when we did our energy audits. In each column there was points on our roller coaster where we had to calculate the amount of joules or energy that the marble is using to move.
Things that I learned in engineering would be learning how to sauter and mold heavy metal gauge wires with ease. Another thing I learned was how to use a bernzomatic torch and how to laser cut shapes and objects onto wood. I also learned how to use a bandsaw. A way I used thinking from engineering throughout this project is thinking on how I can speed things up. In the middle of the construction of the track we found a way to speed up the drying and solidifying of the sauter. We ended up using a wet paper towel to quickly solidify the sauter once it melted out.
Our final product turned out to be quite amazing in my opinion, although the marble didn’t make it all the way to the end all the time, the overall decorations and the cleanliness of the track I thought looked really nice. We had our exhibition at Belmont Park. People came and asked us about our revolution and tried our coasters and they also came with numerous compliments, mainly about our decorations and how it resembles a war or a time of struggle. I feel like I offered a lot of good support and info to my group. Since there was only three of us we each were definitely important group members. I offered help in every aspect and in every part of the roller coaster, from choosing the right base to adding the final support on the already done track. I think I would give myself a 5/5 on all the aspects since these people that I worked with I really knew and I was comfortable around them. We would toss around jokes and make fun of our silly mistakes and how dumb our ideas were. I feel like I was the most strong in collaboration and oral communication in this project since like I said I worked with people that I knew since sixth grade so it was never really awkward to talk to them and tell them what to do. Something I think I can grow in would be content knowledge. Although I knew a lot about my revolution I feel like I had to force myself to do some research about my revolution. I think I can fix this problem if I was interested or found some way to be interested in my research topic I think I would be more willing and engaged in my research.
